RIP Reema Lagoo: Mahesh Bhatt calls her an extraordinary actor, an even better human being

Film fraternity woke up to the sad news of veteran actor Reema Lagoo’s death on Thursday morning. The 59-year-old, who played mother to several leading stars in films, in her career spanning almost four decades, died of a cardiac arrest in Mumbai. Besides films, Reema also worked in some iconic TV shows — the most recent being Naamkarann, which is inspired by the 1998 film Zakhm, based on filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s life.

 “All I can say is that she was an extraordinary actor, undoubtedly, but she was an even better human being,” says Bhatt, who has conceptualized the show.

Bhatt reveals that he was to meet Reema on the sets of the show, but he regrets that it couldn’t happen. “It’s ironic that the last exchange we had was a few days ago, when I sent her a TED talk of a gentleman who survived a plane crash and was imploring —please, you are not going to be here forever, so do whatever you want to do with your loved ones, now. After watching that, she sent me a message, saying, ‘thank you for sending me this chat…this talk… It’s timely and much needed.’ This is what she wrote back,” shares Bhatt, adding that he was busy with the release of his film, so he couldn’t meet Reema on the sets, as he used to, often. “She [Reema] was looking forward to meeting me, but that did not happen. We think we have time but the fact is we don’t. It is indeed tragic that she is no more,” says Bhatt. 

Recalling his professional association with the actor, Bhatt adds, “I bow down to the memory of Reema Lagoo who began her journey with me through Aashiqui (1990) where she played an unwed, a single mother to Rahul Roy. Then she played an extraordinary role in Naajayaz (1995) with Naseeruddin Shah. Then she did a role in Gumrah (1993), where she played Sridevi’s mother. And then she did Naamkaran with me.”

Thanking the actor for adding so much to his films, Bhatt signs off, saying, “She was the heartbeat who would carry a film and a show on her shoulder. I would express my deep gratitude to her for having touched my life.”

Machine movie review: Worst film of Abbas-Mustan’s career, zero star

27 years, 17 films, launch of potential stars, Abbas-Mustan have done it all. From Shah Rukh Khan’s career-defining Baazigar to Akshay Kumar’s first commercial success Khiladi, the duo have always left their mark. Sleek editing, countless twists and glossy texture comprise the trademark Abbas-Mustan style that ruled the suspense-thriller genre in Bollywood for so many years. Yet they failed miserably when it came to the launch of Mustafa, Abbas’ son. Not only this, Machine might be the worst film of their filmography.

In what can be called the skeleton of a story, college boy Ransh (Mustafa) meets rich father Balraj Thapar’s (Ronit Roy) emotionally weak daughter Sarah (Kiara Advani). They fall in love and get married, but don’t live happily ever after.

Meanwhile, half a dozen people get killed for reasons best known to the directors. Somehow they thought they would be able to connect the dots and make Machine a coherent story. Alas, that doesn’t happen and Machine becomes as discreet as its opening credit, which shows a camera entering a human ear and reaching heart through abstractly imagined ear canal.

This is just the beginning of a film, which delves into Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs’ philosophies for no apparent reasons. There is a lot to ponder about in between.

For example, Kiara Advani’s bonding with her tormentor, inexplicable twin brother and absolutely unfathomable murder theories etc. Sometimes they get so weird that you prepare yourself to hear that this all is a big joke. That would have at least gave you the solace that you haven’t got it wrong. Had they released it on April Fool’s Day, Machine would have been considered a perfect practical prank.

 It’s really tough to ignore amateurish CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) and mind-numbing, innuendoes -laden banters in a 148- minute film. That isn’t a perfect killing, so they reprise Tu cheez badi hai mast mast (Originally a part of Mohra, 1994). But the remix serves a purpose: It diverts your anger from poor actors to music composers.

Kiara Advani, who looked confident in MS Dhoni biopic, is as clueless as anybody else in the film, but Mustafa takes the cake. It’s going to hit him hard. Abbas-Mustan disappoints like never before. Even machines will find it hard to enjoy Machine.

Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor was told at the beginning of his career that he is not “conventionally” good looking. But he says he’s glad that unconventional is the ‘new cool in the entertainment business.

Asked about how he has dealt with such remarks, Arjun said, “As you know that Aditya Chopra gave me the first break, he made me aware of the fact that I am not conventionally good looking and that I have to achieve everything through my work. I think my imperfection makes me attractive and these days, unconventional is new ‘cool’... You know what I mean?”

“Well, my cheeks are still chubby... That is God gifted, what to do,” he laughed, adding, “I do not complain about my diet because I am leading a healthy life now. Earlier, because I was obese, I had health issues. I am fit now. There is a difference between being conscious and under confident. As a kid, I was the latter. I was a happy fatty kid who couldn’t play football, basketball, couldn’t talk to girls for dating... Because I was quite under confident. Things started changing when I focused towards becoming an actor,” he shared.

While he agreed that nepotism exists in the film industry, asked if it made him face extra criticism and scrutiny, Arjun, who is the son of film producer Boney Kapoor, said, “See, I have seen the film industry in and out. I can identify a constructive criticism, and differentiate between bullying, things coming from biased space and the judgment of audience. If a film is doing business of Rs 100 crore, it cannot be a bad film because our audience loved it.”

“On the other hand, some critics said that I need to improve my dialogue delivery as it is too fast at times... I find that as correct assessment, so I am working on that. I cannot do much on my droopy eyes, but can work on my expression, which I am doing in films, based on characters. But at the end of the day, for an actor, box office speaks volumes. There is no point of generalizing on critics as well as star kids. And being a mature man, I won’t let criticism affect my peace of mind,” he said.
